Families can argue for all sorts of reasons, and that’s normal enough. But if those arguments are allowed to escalate – if they start to create a lasting gulf between family members – that can lead to serious problems.
However bad things get, continued communication is important, but that can be challenging when everyone is feeling angry or misunderstood. The situation is made even harder when people are facing lots of strains and distractions: boredom during periods of isolation; peer pressure; and the screen-time that people sometimes devote to games, TV and social media. The results can include feelings of being alienated, lonely or overwhelmed.
That’s when some friendly, impartial support and advice can be useful, and that’s one of the ways in which we try to help.
Our volunteers can help people to start communicating again; talking to one another with mutual respect and understanding. We help family members to listen to one another without letting emotions get in the way; to be receptive to other ideas and perspectives; to understand that real communication is a two-way process, and that’s it’s an invaluable skill.
It’s an approach that really works. It brings families together again and helps people to focus on what families do best, which is to love and support one another.
